Paradise Found!

A stay at “Paradise Cove at Lemon Bay” is a retreat like no other! Waterfront cottages full of seaside style and original art. Located in the Old Florida Town of Englewood. Bayfront beach and long dock with pavilion for dolphin, manatee, eagle, and heron sightings. But the guests from across the country are the key to Paradise Cove’s charm! Many snowbirds migrate south every year for months at a time! MacDuff and I will be back to visit our many wonderful, new friends next year!

Dock Dog

“Oh, all cottages are pet friendly! Woof!” added MacDuff.

Incredible manager, Debra, hosts many optional activities … bonfires, jewelry making and her talented husband Jack even serenaded us with his “Trop Rock” ballads!

Every evening on the bay is a celebration as friends gather to toast the sunset … and another day in Paradise!

Field Trip to History

MacDuff and I ventured inland to…

Concord, Massachusetts for history lesson. I was about 12 when my parents took us to the sites of the Battle of Lexington and Concord on Patriots’ Day. I can still hear the fife & drum and smell the musket fire!

Thousands still flock to Minute Man National Park in mid-April for Patriots’ Day. You can even visit the site where Paul Revere was captured by the Red Coats or walk along Battle Road just like soldiers in 1775. British and Colonial re-enactors commemorate the “Shot heard around the world” that spawned the Revolutionary War on the Old North Bridge.

Even if there are no re-enactments, Concord is still a beautiful place for hikes with rolling hills, colonial homes, charming shops, historic sites, and even the lazy Concord River for kayaking.

The Colonial Inn is a must for an overnight stay or a meal. I suggest dining on the front porch and don’t forget to order the delicious Indian Pudding!

Chamard Vineyard in Clinton, CT

Tucked away in Clinton, Connecticut, is a French Bistro which happens to in the center of  vineyards … Chamard Vineyards.

My good friend, Kelly and I sipped the crisp, dry Estate Rose 2015. It was the perfect complement to our homemade Pommes Frites with rosemary salt and roasted garlic dipping sauce. I ordered the Croque Madame: Grilled Black Forest ham and swiss with a fried farm egg and mornay sauce on sourdough. Kelly dined on the Grilled Cheese: Gruyere & Gouda on whole grain bread. Each with a perfectly dressed, green salad. Tres Bon!

The Bistro is open all year!

Chester Holiday Market!!

Strolling through quaint Chester, CT after a freshly fallen snow … like an old New England postcard!

We began our day with brunch at Simon’s Market! Steel cut oatmeal, omelettes, grilled cheeses and  oh! a piece of fresh Banana Cream Pie and a Cinnamon Roll! We love the self-serve coffee, whimsical gifts, and of course the delicious food! Do you know Simon’s sister restaurant … The Blue Oar?

Along Main Street, artisans and food vendors sold their goods on the sidewalk. Seafood, pastries, honey, breads, freshly cooked pizza, and cupcake truck. They make the best Salted-Caramel Gingerbread Cupcake ever! http://www.thesugarbakery.com

We ventured into the unique shops and galleries for the perfect gifts while listening to a violin duet!

Lighthouse Cruising

You don’t have to be a lighthouse fanatic to love this “Lights and Sights” Lighthouse Cruise!! The high-speed Sea Jet Cruise lasts 2 hours past 8 lighthouses, a few mansions, and a fort! The tour guide shares interesting facts and they slow down at each lighthouse so you can take close-up pics! You can sit outside or inside and they serve snacks and drinks ( mmm…Bloody Marys)!  By the way, there’s an excellent gift shop on board, too!

Cruises leave from Cross Sound Ferry in New London…

Autumn = Clydes Cider Mill

Tucked away in Old Mystic lies the only steam-powered apple cider mill in the country! B.F. Clyde started making cider in 1881 and the family continues the tradition today!! Clydes is open everyday September to December. The lines can be long … so order alot!

My favorite: warm apple turnover and  hot mulled cider!

Stay in a Lighthouse

rose-island-sunsetRose Island Lighthouse              Newport, RI

Rose Island Light is a just a boat ride away from the tourists of Newport, Rhode Island! Set in the middle of Narragansett Bay, tiny Rose Island, invites visitors to stay overnight or for a week in the actual 1912 lighthouse! You will be given a short list of lighthouse keeper tasks. The light is no longer working, but it it has been restored through The Rose Island Foundation.
Your stay will be semi-rustic with a water pump, generator for heat, solar outdoor shower, and of course out houses (with a creative shell system…you’ll see)! The entire island is actually a wildlife refuge for birds. Or stay where the soldiers slept in WWI bomb-proof barracks with brick, vaulted ceilings. There are even WWI and WWII magazines where explosives were stored during the island’s Navy Torpedo Station days.
Here are some events they offer throughout the year: Island Dog Romp, Summer Solstice Celebration, and I strongly suggest staying on the Fourth of July! Over 100 people visited by boat for the 4th… live band, Becky’s BBQ Feast, and a perfect view across the bay of the Newport Fireworks at Fort Adams. I discovered that the best spot for fireworks is at the very top of the lighthouse! An unforgettable show!!

Rose Island Lighthouse Tips:
-dress for windy, chilly weather (even on a July evening)
-bring coffee grounds, milk, sugar and breakfast in a cooler (1912 coffee pot!)
-electricity in some rooms
-try to book the Foghorn Room . . . best view, but no bathroom
-try to stay till 10am to see the huge tanker ships sail by!
-don’t forget your camera!!img_0054

Other overnight lighthouses nearby. . .
